"As this was the first of the albums that went cheesy, the feeling we could release what we wanted and experiment with our format was prevalent. As well as being worked almost into the ground, we were trying not to stagnate, but did anyway. I'm sure our eclectic tastes added to the confusion of this period, so we'd have been well served doing 'garage' cover versions.
Crusader had its slow gallop, and was a sound check idea l had, the introduction anyway, that was formed into what became that song.
The most unusual thing was how Rock City was recorded. The Sound City Studio had a 2 story car park across the alleyway. A P.A.-sized studio monitor stack was fed from the sound desk and re-mic'd back to the studio for a live-sounding drum track. On an otherwise transistor-sounding album, it suddenly opened into Bonham-land."
So put on some "Crusader" and TURN IT UP LOUD!!
